Bone health is the most important factor in dental implant success. Calcium intake is critical to maintain a healthy skeleton. Considering that the most common dietary source of calcium is dairy products, it was assumed that an increase in milk intake would be beneficial to maintaining our skeletal health. It turns out the opposite is true.

Milk contains D-galactose which is an oxidant and consuming one to two glasses of milk a day induces systemic oxidative stress, resulting in chronic inflammation and bone resorption. In a Swedish study, high consumption of milk was associated with the worst osteoporosis and highest hip fracture rate. The opposite was found for fermented milk products such as yogurt. The bacterial fermentation to produce yogurt reduces D-galactose and provides probiotics that are antioxidant, resulting in lowered systemic inflammation.  The group with the healthiest skeleton and the fewest hip fractures was the group that consumed the most fermented milk products. The group with the worst skeletal health and most hip fractures consumed the most milk.
