NSAIDs’ Effect on Bone and Implant Integration

NSAIDs’ Effect on Boneand Implant Integration A commonly prescribed medication after implant surgery are one of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). In addition to pain control, many of our patients are taking low dose aspirin for prevention of cardiovascular disease and cancer. When the mechanism of action of these drugs are evaluated, it is obvious they have an impact on the metabolic pathways responsible for bone formation and resorption. This discussion will outline the pharmacology of the NSAIDs and what we know about how they affect implant integration and bone regeneration. This discussion is an excerpt from the live online…

Cementitis and Implant Failure

Cementitis and Implant Failure As we resolve the major reasons for implant failure, we need to look for the less frequent causes of implant failure in order to approach 100% success over time. Residual cement is one of those less frequent but very real causes for implant failure. The implant pictured below exhibited gradual bone loss over time until the implant was lost. The apparent diagnosis was peri-implantitis. Peri-implantitis is possibly one of the most over-diagnosed diseases of the human body. Any bone loss around an implant is diagnosed as peri-implantitis which is grossly inaccurate, and this routine misdiagnosis leads…

Publication: Bone Graft Breakdown Leads to Implant Loss

Publication: Bone Graft Breakdown Leads to Implant Loss The following link takes you to a publication produced by Dr. Bach Le, an associate professor at the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry at the University of Southern California. He documents bone graft failure and implant loss: Successive Reimplantation of Dental Implants Into Sites of Previous Failure Bone graft breakdown has nothing to do with bacteria. It is simply a mechanical failure of the structure that supports the implant. It is an extension of the process that produces marginal bone loss. The following two studies confirm: When implants are placed in cadaver…

Sinus Augmentation with Implant Placement: Always Interesting

Sinus Augmentation withImplant Placement: Always Interesting Sinus Augmentation is a complex but predictable surgery. When implant placement is added, they can become very interesting procedures with multiple moving parts. With science-based regenerative bone graft materials, areas with minimal bone and lost membranes can be successfully treated. When there is a minimal amount of crestal bone, integration in the area of the graft is required and the material must maintain volume to fully cover the implant body over time. Various studies have demonstrated that approximately 25% of sinus augmentations are compromised by torn membranes. A modern science-based bone graft material needs…

Improving Bone Health

Improving Bone Health The performance of a tissue is solely dependent on the health of that tissue. Bone is one of the most complex tissues in the body and is intimately affected by disease and lack of use or overuse. The maxilla and mandible are subjected to extremes of disease. Chronic inflammation of the gingiva, endodontic infections bore holes in the bone and exude infection and purulent exudate, periodontal disease that may persist for years harboring pathogens that destroy wide areas of alveolar bone, and the trauma of extraction that results in microfractures throughout the alveolus causing further alveolar resorption.…
