Simple Ridge Augmentation: The Advantages and Disadvantages of Regenerative Medicine vs Cadaver Bone Grafts

Simple Ridge Augmentation:The Advantages and Disadvantages of Regenerative Medicine vs Cadaver Bone Grafts Let’s define the terms:Regenerative medicine is defined as a branch of medicine concerned with developing therapies that regenerate or replace injured, diseased, or defective cells, tissues, or organs to restore or establish normal function and structure. Regenerative medicine recognizes that the human body is not capable of replacing injured, diseased, or defective tissue without assistance. In order to reestablish normal function and structure, regenerative medicine must introduce a biologically active compound or cells to facilitate the regenerative process. A cadaver is a dead body. A corpse is…

Simple Ridge Augmentation: Step By Step

Simple Ridge Augmentation:Step By Step We previously presented Simple Ridge Augmentation to show the predictability of ridge augmentation using science-based regenerative materials. The cases were presented not as a step by step surgical procedure, but merely to illustrate the effectiveness of the procedure. Below are the pre-op and post-op results achieved with the technique using our Ridge Graft Kit. As a result of presenting the cases, many clinicians came forward and requested more detailed information on the surgical procedure. The following case outlines the step by step procedure that produces predictable ridge augmentation. Pre-op Initial incision. The incision is made…

How the Immune System Determines Bone Graft Success or Failure

How the Immune System Determines Bone Graft Success or Failure: A histological analysis of rabbit tibia and human extraction sockets The immune system plays a critical role in determining the success or failure of bone regeneration. Trauma, infection, thermal, or chemical injury results in an immediate, non-antigen specific immune response. This response is controlled by cells of the innate immune system and is called acute inflammation. Acute inflammation is the first stage of healing and is intended to remove the cause of the injury, remove any damaged tissue, and set the stage for the regenerative process to restore normal form…

Anti-Inflammatory Medication Linked to Osteonecrosis of the Jaw

Anti-Inflammatory Medication Linked to Osteonecrosis of the Jaw Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha (TNFα) inhibitors are common anti-inflammatory medications. In a review of the literature, TNFα inhibitors resulted in six patients with osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) or osteomyelitis (OM) that were attributed solely to TNFα inhibitors. The most common site of ONJ was the posterior mandible (n=5). The mean (SD) duration of anti-TNF-α treatment before the development of bony lesions was 62.5 (47.4) months. Invasive surgery was reported as a precipitating factor in five cases, and the ONJ/OM resolved with conservative management in five. Osteonecrosis and osteomyelitis of the jaw…
